The following describes a Memorial plaque situated in the church of All Saints, CROXBY. Personal data is drawn from the Commonwealth War Graves Commission. Erected on the wall at the western end of the nave is a brass plaque some 20 " by 12 " bearing, in black indented capitals, the words: IN LOVING MEMORY OF JOHN DAVY 8th S.A.I WHO WAS KILLED IN EAST AFRICA July 19th 1917 HIS DUTY NOBLY DONE Lance Corporal 3589 John DAVY was a member of the 8th Regiment of the South African Infantry and was killed, aged 36 years, on the 19th July 1917.He was the son of Henry and Lydia Davy of Scarborough, Yorkshire and had been born in Croxby. He is buried in the Dar Es Salam War Cemetery in Tanzania. |
