The following is a brief review of the War Memorial to the fallen of the Second World War situated in the Parish Church of St Mary's, CLAXBY. Parish Church of St Mary's CLAXBY The memorial comprises a cream marble tablet erected adjacent to the pulpit on the South side of the nave. It stands some 48 ''off the floor and measures approximately 36 " by 20 ".At the top of the tablet is a cross surrounded by a wreath with a scroll (no inscription) underneath. It bears the following words 1939 - 1945 IN HONOURED MEMORY OF CLAXBY BOYS ALBERT ARLISS ALAN BRISTOW ROY WILSON WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES IN THE SECOND WORLD WAR AND IN GRATITUDE FOR THE SAFE RETURN OF THESE WHO SERVED IN HIS MAJESTY'S FORCES D R BRISTOW E ROACH J S BRISTOW J ROBINSON WAAF G BYCROFT C SAUNBY W DALTON J B SHARP H FIELDSEND G SLATER C T HEWSON M E H SMITH ATS S L HEWSON WAAF N SURFLEET L R OGG M A WRESELL ATS Albert Ernest ARLISS was the husband of Lena Irene Arliss and served as Lance Corporal 4975381 in the Sherwood Forresters. He was killed in action on the 25th April 1943 aged 23 years and is buried in the Medjez-el-Bab War Cemetery in Tunisisa. Alan Edwin BRISTOW served as Private 14568000 in A Company of the 6th Battalion Lincolnshire Regiment and was the son of William Charles and Elisabeth Ellen Bristow of Claxby. He was killed in action aged 19 on the 10th January 1941 and lies buried in the Cassino War Cemetery in Italy. Roy WILSON. This man has not been identified although two men bearing this name were killed whilst serving with the 6th Battalion, Lincolnshire Regiment. |
